On Reading

This summer I read "Unbroken". It would be more accurate to say I devoured "Unbroken". The book languished on my reserve list at the library for months, from the time in January or February when I heard an interview with its author, Laura Hillenbrand, until August. By then, I had borrowed my parent's copy. I stayed up late, lolling in a rocking chair on their porch for several hot summer nights, breathing in the tale of Louie Zamparini.

There has been a bit of a drought in the reading department since then. Then, voila, this week not one, but two books I put on my reserve list at the library came in. Two books recommended by Parade magazine sometime this summer, books which I had eagerly put on my list back in the days when I, bolstered by coffee, enjoyed an hour of "me-time" before Bella woke up. It's much harder to get up early now, particularly on cold, dark mornings without the promise of coffee. Instead, my prebed ritual this week finds me curled up on the couch, beside the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree, reading Ann Pachett's "State of Wonder". If I'm fast enough, and Bella takes long naps over the Thanksgiving break, I might also get through "Wonder Girl" before both are due back to the library on December 3rd.

The dishes might not get done. And we may keep digging for socks in the unfolded baskets of laundry, but too bad! Reading, oh how I missed you...
